R O C K L I N

Shortly after graduating college, I lived and worked abroad in Sydney, Australia. I had been told time and time again that before settling into a career and serious relationship I should “see the world.” So trot around the globe I did—with three years’ worth of waitressing tips and two small suitcases, I set sail—first with friends to Europe and Asia then solo to the land down under. It was a time of uncertainty and many lonely moments—I literally didn’t know a soul my first day there—but also a period where I leapt unhesitatingly into so many firsts and new experiences. For those nine months abroad, I wasn’t afraid of the “what ifs” or caught up in making excuses of why I couldn’t “do this” or “do that.” And the result? Not only did I meet lifelong friends from cultures so vastly different than my own, (attempt to) learn how to surf, and take a stab at salsa dancing, but I became comfortable with being uncomfortable. With 2017 upon us, I can’t think of a better time to jump out of your comfort zone. It doesn’t need to be as audacious as A mind that traveling halfway around is stretched the world—all we ask is by a new it’s something that scares, excites or intrigues you. Need experience some ideas? In this month’s can never go feature, “Your 2017 To-Do back to its old List” Sharon Penny scoured dimensions.” the region and found over —Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. 30 local activities that’ll force you to shake up your routine—things that run the gamut from food challenges and cooking classes, to karaoke and indoor skydiving. Here at Style, we decided the new year would also be a perfect time to bring a new look to the magazine; think fresh fonts, bolder colors, different layouts and a department dedicated to all-things food and beverage, aptly titled Eat & Drink. We hope you dig it…and that it makes you want to dig into some of the dishes! Let me know what you think by emailing megan@stylemg.com. Whatever hand you were dealt in 2016, remember that 2017 is a new beginning—an opportunity to wipe the slate clean—so fill it with love, laughter and perhaps a new hobby…and make it your Best. Year. Q&A WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Breathe deeply and listen—you will learn more when you do. ARE YOU HIGH OR LOW MAINTENANCE?

I think I’m medium maintenance with high expectations.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

Hands down, my children. I have successfully raised two relatively well-behaved, articulate and selfsufficient women. FAVORITE HUMANITARIAN CAUSE?

The arts. It brings a sense of community, humanity and awareness like no other cause. I believe we should practice coming together when there is not a tragedy—and the arts are a perfect mechanism to provide connection. BEST WORDS OF WISDOM YOU’VE RECEIVED?

I asked my 87-year-old father on his birthday this past July for his advice. He said: "Take care of your health [and] your children, invest your money wisely, and love fiercely."

She still recalls the days she and her younger brother, William—who passed away in 1981 from medical complications due to cerebral palsy—would sit together and listen to vinyl records of the Boston Pops Symphony. “We shared a love of art and music,” she says. These days, Whitmore—who still sings in her spare time—serves on numerous art advocacy boards, including the board of directors for Californians for the Arts/California Arts Advocates. The organization celebrated its 50th year of service last November, and January 25 marked the relaunch of their newest event—Interlude to the Season Arts Awards Gala, which benefited the companies and individuals who work together to promote the arts in our community. For Whitmore, it’s all about working toward a future in which every child has access to the arts—whether it be through music programs, art classes or regular visits to galleries and exhibits. “Arts education reduces dropout rates and builds self-awareness...There’s a lot of data out there, [and] I see the positive effects every day.” —Amber Foster

WHAT’S IN SEASON: TURNIPS If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to try new foods, turnips should be first in line. Add them raw to salads, or mix them into stews alongside other vegetables like potatoes and carrots. Turnips have a sharp flavor—similar to raw cabbage or radishes—

less bitter, but the bitter taste can be reduced in larger leaves by pouring off the water from the initial boiling and replacing with fresh water.

DID YOU KNOW? Turnips have been grown for over 3,000 years, and are especially valuable since all parts of the plant can be eaten. Even though they’re members of the brassicaceae family, which is a genus of plants in the mustard family (informally known as cruciferous vegetables), the veggie is often substituted for potatoes. Turnip lanterns are an old tradition in Ireland and Scotland where large turnips were hollowed out, carved with faces and used as candle lanterns.

Turnip greens can be eaten boiled, steamed, stir-fried or grated into salads, and are high in vitamins A, C and K, plus folate and calcium. Smaller leaves make a great side dish when cooked, as they’re

The most common types of turnips are whiteskinned, with the exception of the upper part, which can turn purple, red or greenish wherever sunlight has fallen. Choose turnips that are heavy for their size, have a smooth skin, sweet aroma and crisp green tops. Once washed and completely dried, store in an airtight container in a refrigerator for up to a week. For extended storage, keep them unwashed and place one layer in a cardboard box; store in a cool, dark, well-ventilated space for up to six months.

What is APR and how does it differ from mortgage interest rate? APR (annual percentage rate) is the cost of financing expressed in percentage terms. The interest rate tells you the annual cost (interest) that you’ll pay to borrow the money (principal) and also any charges associated with acquiring the loan, including points, lender fees, escrow fees, etc. APR is a useful tool when comparing loans; it’s important to know, however, that APR spreads the costs over the life of the loan, so if you don’t plan on Manuel Tobias // Tobias Mortgage Company // 110 Gateway Drive, keeping the loan for the entirety of Suite 130, Lincoln // 916-949-9637, its term, the APR can be misleading. tobiasmortgage.com

Purposeful Pottery

by HEATHER L. BECKER

Self-taught ceramicist Lisa Bone —who creates unique pieces using horse hair—also offers classes for small groups of women looking to have a fun, relaxing evening and make a piece of art they can be proud of. She also does custom orders for clients, in addition to making urns and personal gifts. “I want people to like what they see,” says Bone. “No one sees the same thing in one piece, and if someone gets personal pleasure from one of my pieces—then I couldn't be happier.”

HLB: HOW DO YOU CRAFT POTTERY WITH HORSE HAIR? LB: [The pieces] are fired in a gas kiln and then removed and put into the open air when the horse hair is applied. The hair burning onto the exterior leaves a carbon marking where the hair was placed. The process takes only a few minutes, as the vessel cools quickly, and the hair will no longer burn onto the exterior. Oftentimes, people will send me tail hair from a special horse or one that has passed; the bond between a horse and its owner is a special one. Horse hair pottery is also popular with people who don't own horses, because it has such an organic, earthy feel. HLB: WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MAJOR INFLUENCES? LB: Because I'm pretty much

As with all art, you can be influenced by someone, but when you do it yourself, it becomes your own style and often doesn't really resemble what you originally tried to do. Failures and mistakes have influenced me more than anything. Some interesting pieces have come from mistakes that I capitalized on. HLB: WHERE DO YOU FIND DAILY INSPIRATION? LB: In my life situations at the time. If I want to express something personal, I’ll work on a sculpture or a plaque that can translate a message or feeling. Also, if I have a particular piece turn out better than I had hoped or envisioned, it becomes an inspiration for me to achieve and build upon. HLB: IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU WISH YOU WERE GIVEN WHILE STARTING OUT? LB: Patience. Rome wasn't built in a day, and some of my best work came about after letting it sit for a bit. Pottery doesn’t have to be completed in one sitting. My complex shapes turn out better when I let the clay firm up a bit to gain strength. This has been the hardest lesson—to just slow down. HLB: DO YOU HAVE ANY GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? LB: It takes years to become good on the wheel. Each year I’m better, but I’ll never Through January feel like I'm good enough. Everlasting Love

5 Keys to a Happy Relationship

by JOE BORDERS, MFT

2

Try to assume the best about your partner

Oftentimes when we’re upset with our partner we assume they have malicious intent or are being foolish. It can help to take a moment and think, “If I were to assume the best about you then____.” Maybe your partner was late picking you up because they were worried about meeting a deadline at work, or they were short with you because they didn’t sleep well the night before. Knowing these things doesn’t forgive bad behavior, but makes it seem less personal, intentional and offensive, and helps you to empathize with your partner.

3

Avoid punching first or running

4

Keep communication lines open

As a therapist, I’ve seen relationships troubled in many different ways, but the following are the core components I always suggest couples work on.

Joe Borders, MFT, works with couples, teens and individuals in Roseville and Sacramento. He specializes in addiction, codependency and working with LGBTQ clients. For more information and to read his bi-weekly mental health blog, visit joeborders.com.

1

Know your cycle

All couples have a central negative cycle they repetitively get stuck in, which is the way they cope with feeling insecure or unsafe in a relationship. In the most common type, pursuer-distancer, one person tends to pull back when feeling insecure while the other person copes by pursuing connection from their partner. In this way, couples trigger each other and tension escalates. The distancer feels more pull to distance, which makes the pursuer feel the need to pursue even more. Through recognizing and understanding their cycle, couples can feel more secure with each other and avoid many painful arguments.

22

stylergbr.com // JANUARY 2017 //

/stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemagrgbr

Although it sounds cliché, open communication is imperative in a healthy relationship. You need to be able to communicate your feelings, feel heard and understood, and do the same for your partner.

5

Don’t make your partner pay for someone else’s mistakes

Breakups, abuse and neglect in relationships can be traumatic. Much like in PTSD, bad experiences in previous relationships can affect your sense of safety in a current courtship. It’s important to explore underlying emotions and assumptions that trigger you, and realize that you could be carrying past trauma and treating your partner as if they were your abusive stepparent or ex who had an affair. In situations like this, therapy can really help.

Main photo © kieferpix/fotolia.com. Author photo coutesy of Joe Borders.

When we’ve been in a relationship with someone for a while we collect memories of all the times they’ve slighted us. Humans are naturally made to look out for danger, so it’s no wonder we pay such close attention to negative interactions in relationships, where we’re our most vulnerable. After repetitive negative interactions, we assume or predict that our partners intend to harm us or are going to do something to upset us. In cases like this, many people will either punch first by throwing out a quick insult, or run away before anything has actually happened— thus triggering the negative cycle.

Below: Jay Barrios and Paloma Opposite Page Top: Sarah and Alexis Opposite Page Bottom: Sarah, Jacob and Alexis

It’s a story that could have inspired The Karate Kid. Jay Barrios was a disadvantaged, small kid in a dysfunctional home, struggling in school, and unable to defend himself in a place where the weak were preyed upon. One day, a group of three older kids were bullying him when a man intervened and set him on a new path. “He dusted me off and offered to teach me martial arts, so I could protect myself,” Barrios says. “When I told him I had no money to pay him, he said,

‘When you want to stop learning, I’ll stop teaching.’” Today, Barrios is a pastor and the CEO of InspiredWarrior, an organization—open to everyone regardless of religion, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity or gender—that helps people build strength, self-confidence and community through martial arts, physical fitness, and emotional and spiritual wellness. It wasn’t an easy path. Along the way, Barrios served in the army and later was a police officer, where he says he was a good cop, but was also “all cop,” and nearly lost his family as a result. He knew he needed to change, but as someone who only knew how to be a cop and a soldier, he found himself in a deep personal crisis. “One day, I saw a church off the highway and wandered in,” Barrios says. “It got me praying. I’d always felt called to help change people’s lives, but I wasn’t doing that as a cop. I thought back to the man who’d mentored me and the impact he’d had on my life, and I knew what I had to do.” Divine intervention restored his family, and with his wife’s support he set out to create InspiredWarrior, which—after a lot of hard and humbling work—opened in 2011. Nowadays, he works with 20-30 kids and adults at any given time, with an all-volunteer staff of teachers and trainers. Why martial arts? It certainly isn’t about teaching kids to hurt each other. “My mentor told me hurting people is easy, and that if I wanted to truly be great, I first needed to learn how to heal people,” Barrios says. “Martial arts attracts people, and the more you train, the more reverence you gain for human life and your fellow man.” And why the gospel? When Barrios prayed in that church off the highway, he said if God could restore his family, he would teach and preach God’s word to anyone who wanted to hear it, while loving and respecting anyone who did not. “Our culture is riddled by the social decay of isolation, depression, violence, obesity and substance abuse, and InspiredWarrior was created to rise to this challenge,” Barrios says. “Our hope is for everyone to experience life in all its fullness and to see the promises of God fulfilled in their lives.” inspiredwarrior.org

deep-blue dwelling offers a sanctuary to someone who works from home or simply wants to hide away and read a good book. With a focus on personalized details like X-back shelving and rope-framed wall mirrors, the space is the epitome of casual elegance. DIY wainscoting provides an elegant touch and pairs well with understated accents like a clean color palette and simple accessories. With a tucked-away design, KKDL designed a home office full of sophisticated storage and plush seating. For the older professional, this master suite’s study offers a relaxing retreat full of books, artwork and gentlemanly accessories—a place where a professional can study, work or relax without ever stepping out of their home.

Add dimension with furnishings and accent pieces of varied sizes and scale. Opting for a small grouping of side tables, as opposed to one large coffee table, is a great way to make a statement.

4

Add texture when possible. The juxtaposition of smooth surfaces and plush seating is perfect for a home office.

This beautiful study is reflective of the people in the home—complete with their favorite trinkets and accessories, handhewn materials and deep, saturated coloration throughout—and will be a haven for them as they navigate their careers, extracurricular activities, social events and family time.

TO-DO list by SHARON PENNY

Have you made a 2017 to-do list yet? Is it full of things you should do, but don’t really want to do, like “exercise more” or “breakup with Peanut Butter M&M’s”? Is it kind of chore-y? Here at Style, we think a to-do list should inspire and get you excited about the coming year, so we’ve compiled a number of fun, enriching activities that you can do locally in 2017. Whether it’s competing in a triathlon, taking a class, exploring local history, or eating something really huge just for fun, the list that follows is zeropercent chores and 100-percent fun. (Besides, Peanut Butter M&M’s are good.) Here's to a great year!

Ever wish Disneyland’s Splash Mountain was longer and had actual water instead of that weird-smelling chlorinated stuff? Hit the American River and go ! The lower half of the South Fork starts out slow and finishes fast and is great for beginners. There’s plenty of licensed outfitters to choose from—select one that fits your plans and budget—but we’re big fans of Adventure Connection. DINE REVIEW

Koi Garden Restaurant A Bounty of Chinese Food Favorites By LORN RANDALL // Photos By DANTE FONTANA

I know that trying a new Chinese restaurant always comes with some trepidation. We all have our favorites, and change is not always a good thing when it comes to General Tso’s Chicken. Gone are the buffet servers and sneeze guards of previous restaurants in the same spot. Koi Garden Their Peking Restaurant has now opened Pork Chop was with a diverse menu featuring a welcome Chinese, Japanese and some Thai dishes. What's more, all surprise...I would their ingredients are sourced order enough of and used thoughtfully; these thin, crunchy, including fresh garlic, grassdeep-fried chops fed beef, the finest miso and high-quality cooking wine. in their tangy red I started my visit with a bowl wine vinaigrette of Wor Wonton Soup, which for everyone at the in many places is flavorless, table—twice. soggy and non-descript. The version served to me had a light chicken broth, fresh vegetables, bountiful meats and shrimp, and dumplings that were tender but not overcooked. One of the best I’ve had. Next, I sampled the Hong Kong-style Beef Chow Mein, featuring crispy pan-fried egg noodles topped with vegetables and tender, sliced beef in brown gravy. My two favorite dishes, however, were the StirFried Eggplant in Szechuan sauce (you can also order it with garlic soy sauce) and the Peking Pork Chop. The eggplant was a stunning presentation— HOURS: 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. (Sunday); 11 a.m.-3 p.m., the plum-toned exterior 4:30-9 p.m. (Monday-Friday); against the golden flesh, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. (Saturday) dark red sauce and green TRY THIS: Stir-Fried onions was indeed an Eggplant in Szechuan Sauce; eye-catcher—while the Peking Pork Chop sweet and spicy Szechuan ALCOHOL: Beer and wine sauce proved to be an excellent accompaniment TAB: $ (lunch); $$ (dinner) to the delicately roasted HEADS-UP: They deliver aubergine. Their Peking and cater Pork Chop was a welcome surprise. Usually by the time you finish navigating your way through the fat and bone, biting your finger is about all the meat you can find. This was not the case

here; in fact, I would order enough of these thin, crunchy, deep-fried chops in their tangy red wine vinaigrette for everyone at the table—twice. True story, a distant relative was out for a visit from Texas. While we dined at a prominent local Asian establishment, he uttered this pearl of culinary wisdom: “You can always tell good Chinese food by the pineapple.” Follow my family member’s advice, and leave the Chinese food Koi Garden Restaurant to folks like my new friends 1420 East Roseville Parkway, Suite 160, Roseville 916-787-8788, koigardenrestaurant.com at Koi Garden.

Sugar + Cream // Standing at the counter of Sugar + Cream in the Roseville

Galleria, I had two questions, “What is ponchik, and what does taro taste like?” and walked away with just one, “How did I live this long without either of them in my life?” The quaint kiosk separates itself from conventional competitors with its exotic selection of ice cream flavors, sizeable quantities and low prices. As the worker generously and patiently enlightened my curiosity about ponchik (an Armenian doughnut, essentially) and handed me a sample of the purple taro, I decided I may as well try the two together. The next thing I knew, I was at the Galleria two days later in pursuit of the savory ponchik-taro sandwich sensation once again. To my slight disappointment, ponchik is only available Friday through Sunday, but don’t let its exclusivity deter you from visiting Sugar + Cream on weekdays. The shop serves locally roasted coffee, plus milkshakes, house-made waffle cones and waffle bowls, and regular scoops seven days a week; and the taro ice cream’s elusive flavor alone was enough to make me forget about the doughnut. If you’re bored with vanilla and sugar cones and looking to expand your ice cream palette, swing by Sugar + Cream for something that’s (literally) cool. TASTE // SIP ON THIS

CURRIED FALAFEL WITH KALE SALAD Falafel are wonderful, deep-fried delights that I could pop like candy. However, I don’t own a deep fryer—but I do have an oven! These baked sensations—which acquired the moniker goldenballs during development—are a hit, with rich curry adding spiciness and a faux deep-fried hue. Tahini dressing, a falafel requisite, is imbued with the same sunshiny curry powder, as well as maple syrup, lending a caramel-like sweetness that melds beautifully with a simple salad of kale, carrots and cucumbers. FOR THE CURRIED FALAFEL 1 tbsp. refined avocado oil or extra-virgin olive oil 1 onion, roughly chopped 2 cloves garlic 2 cups cooked chickpeas 1 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tbsp. curry powder 1/2 tsp. sea salt 1/2 cup chickpea flour FOR THE DRESSING 3 tbsp. tahini 2 tbsp. lemon juice 2 tbsp. water

1 tbsp. maple syrup 1 tbsp. nutritional yeast 2 tsp. curry powder 1/2 tsp. sea salt Ground black pepper, to taste FOR THE KALE SALAD 1/2 bunch (4–5 cups) kale, destemmed and torn into bitesized pieces 1 large carrot, julienned or grated 1 regular cucumber, peeled and diced

Make the Curried Falafel: Preheat oven to 425-degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large-rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and grease with oil. In a food processor, pulse onion and garlic until a paste forms. Add chickpeas, lemon juice, curry powder and salt; pulse until fully combined. Pulse in chickpea flour until fully combined (will look like very thick hummus). Rest for 30–40 minutes at room temperature to allow flour to absorb excess moisture. Line a large-rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and grease with oil. Scoop 2–3 tablespoon-sized rounds onto parchment; roll into balls. Bake for 25 minutes. Serves 4. Make the Dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together all ingredients.

Make the Kale Salad: In a large salad bowl, massage kale until bright green and tender. Add carrots, cucumber, and dressing; toss to combine. To Serve: Add a bed of salad to bowls; top with a few falafel.

DEVICE BREWING COMPANY’S HAZE: ON SAISON Device is a small, family-run brewery with a kid- and dog-friendly taproom just east of Downtown Sacramento. Since 2013 they’ve been producing a variety of brews, from West Coast-style ales to their award-winning Brits in Moscow Russian Imperial Stout and Kid Casual Blond Ale. Their seasonal Haze: On Saison is a French-style farmhouse ale that’s fermented at warm temperatures, thus giving it the characteristic flavor profile of a classic saison. Well-balanced and remarkably complex yet simple, it’s a light, malty beer that clocks in at 5.3-percent ABV, with hints of clove, pepper and fruit notes. The combination of being mildly tart and bitter with a spicy kick make it a perfect pairing for the assortment of flavors in Curried Falafel. —Eden Tuscano, 36 Handles Restaurant & Pub

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Costume Junction offers costume rentals for all occasions, along with handmade and custom, made-to-order offerings. The business started when my daughter went on a field trip; I thought, “If I make some pioneer dresses I could sell or rent them.” And I was right! A few years into the hobby business, a local costume rental shop went out of business, which left little resources available for one particular school program, Walk Through the American Revolution. With that, the colonial inventory grew, as did the rest of the collection. When I would hear of a school event, I’d email teachers asking them to share my information. Customers would tell other families about me and soon I was known as the go-to resource for these school programs. One day, a friend told me about a woman who had owned a costume rental shop in Northern California for 35 years but retired. On my way home from seeing her, I asked my mom if she would help me run a costume shop until I could retire. She immediately said yes, and I opened the shop in October 2015.

Porch Swing Pickings is a monthly handmade and vintage boutique that provides customers with unique gifts, home décor, repurposed and upcycled items, and collectibles. The store is comprised of over nine local vendors who specialize in handcrafted pieces, art, refreshed furniture, signs, toffee, and vintage finds. This business definitely found us. As two crafty women, we always wanted to have a way to share our work with others. When we couldn’t find the perfect place to do that, we decided to make our own perfect place. By doing so, the experience is even better, because we can help others fulfill this dream as well!

Why is your staff the best in the business?

What’s your biggest job perk?

Costume Junction is family-operated. My mother, Linda, manages the shop and my daughter, my sister and niece help out as well. Talk about a labor of love.

As a mother-daughter team, we get to work together and learn from each other. We also get to help other local artists fulfill their dreams.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

We love all of the other local vintage stores and mom-and-pop shops in the area, and we believe in supporting each other. Referrals are key to any businesses success!

I go to bed. One of my favorite mottos is, “Tomorrow is a new day.” If things are going badly, one just needs to pick themselves up by the bootstraps and get through it, which includes starting each day with a great attitude.

What’s your hidden talent? Although I haven’t done it in years, roller-skating.

And finally, customer service is…?

How are you involved with both the community and your customer? One of our biggest passions is helping others. We have partnered with local nonprofits and love to help the community as much as we can.

What’s your favorite local business other than your own?

And finally, customer service is…? Customer service is our number one priority. Without them we wouldn’t be where we are today. We love to learn about each and every customer and help them find exactly what they’re looking for. We even offer a wish list to ensure they find the perfect piece.

Being attentive to customer needs and making sure they’re happy. I have many return customers and believe it’s not only because of the product, but because of the customer service.

DO YOU KNOW THAT OUR EDITORIAL IS NOT PAID FOR, NOR CAN IT BE PURCHASED?

In fact, our Introducing and Eat & Drink section reviews are not paid advertisements. If you’d like your business profiled, please email Megan Wiskus at megan@stylemg.com. Once we determine when your business will be featured, we will contact you to schedule a time to come out and take a photograph. Thank you!

Strike a Pose

Local Lumberjack Brings Sexy Back forearms are the size of salmon. He’s a bail bondsman! Yep, Josh could be a very intimidating dude…as long as he's not dressed up like a mermaid or lying across the hood of a vintage pickup in a pair of red polka dot boxer shorts. The burly former Oak Ridge High School student has become perhaps t h e u n l i ke l i e s t g l o b a l heartthrob ever, via a series Josh and his son Tyler of what are called “dudeoir” photos. You’ve probably seen them. If you haven’t, you must not be online. Photographer Tami Bears of Artistic Photography by Tami had the initial idea. She’d seen a photo shoot with a man that was a send-up of sexy “boudoir” images, and they made her laugh. “But I immediately thought I could put an extra comical spin on it by making it a redneck version, with a logger-type ‘manly man.’” Tami considered several guys, but none clicked. “I had almost given up when out of the blue Josh posted a selfie on Facebook, and the lightbulb lit up!” She and Josh were already friends. She kicked herself for not thinking of him sooner. As it turned out, it was a serendipitous moment, because unbeknownst to Tami, Josh—whose personality is as outsized as his physique—had been “wanting to do something goofy for a while.” Goofy like this? Um, actually, yeah. “I wanted to do something half-naked!” he laughs. Which explains the selfie Tami saw on Facebook: Josh in a pair of boxer shorts. Tami shared her idea. He loved it. “...the overalls, the ‘country bumpkin’ theme...I thought it was fun.” Neither she nor Josh had any plans for the photos, other than to share them with friends on Catch Tom on the Pat and Tom Morning Facebook “for a few laughs.” Show on New But what happened next is the stuff Country 105.1, email him at tnvmailey@ of social media legend. Within days, the gmail.com, or follow him on Twitter images had been shared over 50,000 @kncitom. times. Tami got a call from Cosmopolitan, which, along with other media like Good WHAT’S COMING NEXT MONTH? Morning America, had shared the pictures Don’t miss Style’s “Iconic Architecture: online. Soon, they were hearing from 8 Great Local people in France, Germany, Sweden and Homes.” Australia. “We were both shocked and completely in uncharted water.” A full-

time wedding photographer, Tami says, “I was using my breaks to try and talk to foreign media from bathroom stalls!” adding that it has been “both chaotic and fun—all rolled into one.” They’ve been hearing from regular people, too. Thousands of them. “We got so many messages saying how we made them feel better in their own skin, and they loved what we were doing,” Tami says. But there has been some negativity, too; in the first shoot, Tami included an American flag (“because Flag Day was coming up, and I'm a patriotic girl”), but its use offended some, which she says “broke my heart.” However, most feedback has been “overwhelmingly positive.” Since that initial shoot on Josh’s parents’ Shingle Springs property, there have been several more, including one at the ocean that was more or less a crazed mash-up of Baywatch and The Little Mermaid. Along the way, they’ve teamed up in real life, too. They’ve started dating. How many more can they do? Josh acknowledges the joke is probably close to running its course but says, “I don’t know; as long as people are laughing and asking to see more, we’ll keep doin’ ‘em.” And that seems to be their real motivation, especially Josh’s. Despite his lumberjack-on-a-Harley look, he has a gentle voice, a quick laugh and kind eyes. “We’re in some tough times,” he says. “People need to laugh. And if they can forget about their problems for a minute and have a laugh at my expense…? I’m all in.” Even if all he’s in are a pair of red polka dot boxer shorts.
